What a busy spring we have had!
Most recently we have participated in and helped organise a Street Party on our street. It was a wonderful day. The street was closed and there were children running up and down the street on scooters and playing football. Lots of people were suprised by how many people they didn’t know from our street and about how many kids there were. It rained a lot and we enjoyed a typical British situation of having a BBQ in the rain.
We also decided on a design for (designed by one of our members) a bike shed with a green roof. We used reclaimed wood and we charred it to avoid using chemicals.
We had to figure out how to re lay tiles and cut scaff poles and learn how to use a chisel. As a woman, I found it to be a very empowering experience.
We are very excited with the plants growing on top of the bike shed roof. We have many herbs (oregano, mint, chives, thyme and lavender), edible flowers (nasturtiums and calendula) wild flowers, lettuces, strawberries, kale, chard, basil…
We have recently added an irrigation system and a water butt.
We have eaten our first home grown tomato today and we have enough kale growing to eat it regularly.
